Sewing up a quilted vinyl headliner for my car’s hardtop! Ebay material, roughly $17 per yard already quilted, cut to shape, now my mom is hemming it! Has some 1/8th-inch batting on the back which should do good to absorb some interior noise and make it a nicer place to be as well as distinguish my hardtop from the lesser plebian hardtops. Going to try Performix Headliner Adhesive for attaching it and when that inevitably fails go for tried-and-true 1-inch 3m double-sided foam tape.
The commercial version of this? $250. I kid you not. My mom might be willing to make these to sell to people for some side change if there’s enough interest. Will have completed photos later.

Holy fudge that’s classy and it looks like it matches the ‘02 SE-only saddle brown interior! I’m curious but also cautious about getting one since my head -just- fits under the hardtop if I straighten my back up (I need to keep my back straight more often) and I know I can’t sit upright with a helmet on (would do a foamectomy but not legal for ES).

< twit response > What, you’re not going to go with paper-backed vinyl sheet or poly linen with hoop pockets in it like a 50s car? < / twit>

Depends on whether or not it has “insulation” and/or defrosting. Without both, around 30 to 35 pounds. Mine has both and it’s around 50 pounds.

...foamectomy isn’t legal for ES?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
nobody tell Jayhawk Jake. I foamectomy’d my car so I’d fit in it with a helmet on. It’s actually SIGNIFICANTLY darker than saddle brown, almost black. Rustoleum makes a paint color that is very close to saddle brown which I might be re-painting this vinyl with. It’s honestly annoyingly difficult to find ANY fabric that matches Saddle Brown. I want to make a shift boot and handbrake boot that are either vinyl or alcantara and match my seats. Actually, just ordered some brown microsuede. Coming Soon (tm)

40lbs. Same weight as a soft top with frame. A majority of the weight is that enormous piece of glass, which I believe is the same piece of glass as teh RX-8 rear window, meaning Mazda produced that piece of glass from 1989 through 2012. Impressive.

Technically, this SCCA rule is sort of a catch-all to prevent too many gray areas:
If a modication is not specically authorized in this or previous sections of these Rules, it is not allowed.
Modifying the stock seat by removing padding isn’t explicitly defined as illegal (although cutting holes to allow for harnesses is illegal for stock class) but since it’s not clearly defined, it’s probably not allowed.
That said, no one is going to raise a fuss unless they’re super-competitive. If you’re there to have fun, then no one should complain.

No +20 web designer points, because there *are* irregular tags with a two-part initial tag. The attribute tag, for example.
Anyway, really old-timey headliners arent glued in place, they use spring steel (kind of like umbrella rib) support hoops that run through pockets sewn into the headliner.

Aah. Yeah, see, that’s the same approach I take to my aluminum radiator. Is it stock or stock-like? Nah. But anyone who thinks that I beat them because I have a ricer radiator can go jump off a cliff.
I still hate Miata seats. I want low-backed seats with movable headrests so bad.
Something like these cheap generic eBay bucket seats. Mmmmm. So cheap looking.
